Barracuda Queens Review: A Teenage Tale and a Robbery Gone Wrong

Barracuda Queens Review – Teenage is a tricky phase some would say. As you go from being a kid to a young adult, the transition is anything but a challenge. You try to fit into society, start putting yourself out more than before, and are also tasked with decisions that could more or less change your life trajectory.

Netflix Nordic’s latest offering Barracuda Queens is more or less an insight into this part of the lives of a group of teenage girls in the 90s Sweden. This short series tells the story of a group of teenage girls who start robbing their rich neighbors after one wild night where they end up spending thousands of euros unbeknownst to their parents. This Swedish show was released on Netflix on June 6, 2023, and consists of six episodes. Alva Bratt, Tindra Monsen, Sandra Zubovic, Sarah Gustafsson, and Tea Stjärne star in the lead.

    Barracuda Queens Summary

Barracuda Queens takes place in the 90s in Sweden where a group of girls from a wealthy family spend their money to their will. As far as their parents don’t suspect their activities, the girls follow their will and have free reign. One fine night, the girls end up spending a lot of money on alcohol during their vacation. They won’t be able to tell their parents about the expense and think of finding ways to procure the money quietly. It all begins when Klara steals Lollo’s mother’s watch.

When she comes clean about the act Lollo and the gang get the idea to rob their rich neighbors to pay off the debt. They leave behind a wrecked space and glasses of champagne which they drink from each house after robbing it clean. They rob enough to cover the debt but by then they are bitten by the greedy bug and they rob more and more.

They rent a warehouse space to store their loot, but it is also soon uncovered by the warehouse’s owner. Things take a downturn when their activities are discovered by everyone. The promising futures of these young minds plummet considerably due to their juvenile acts.

    Barracuda Queens Review

The show Barracuda Queens holds promise right from the start. With six episodes of less than 40 minutes each, Barracuda Queens captures the viewers’ rapt attention. In each of the girls, we see that there is an underlying melancholia for the younger days, the thirst to do something for themselves, the frustration of their current situations, and the desire to wage a rebellion. When the group starts stealing from their neighbors, they are not only stealing money but also venting their anger and frustrations toward the individuals who have wronged them in one way or another.

We also see instances of patriarchy sprinkled in between the story when Lollo’s brother tells her to not get intimate with Tobbe as he has a bad reputation. When Lollo raises a question, he simply states that it is different for the girls in society when they indulge in such behavior. Then there is also the instance where Mia is harassed by the man of the house she works in, but she cannot raise a voice because she needs the money to afford a living. It comes to light how women are subjugated in society regardless of their age, class, and education.

As it tells the stories of teenage girls, it also sheds light on the condition of rich families. These families have it all – money, comfort, and luxury – and yet they always seem to be playing pretend. No one actually talks to each other, and the relationships are highly askew. The adults in the families engage in erotic games where they spend the night with each other’s spouses just ‘to keep the flame alive’ in their own marriages.

The show also goes to show how emotions are in upheaval in one’s teens. There is an urge to act sporadically and on impulse which does not always lead to positive outcomes. In addition to being spoiled with money and luxury, the girls also come from a privileged background where they don’t think that robbing others to satisfy their urges is incorrect.

If you look at their group name – Barracuda Queens – one might even come to think that they draw the name from the fish Barracuda which is known to capture its prey in short and quick outbursts. Just like the fish’s attack, the girls also attack their rich neighbors quickly which is a result of their outburst against the frustration they feel.

How to make Green Tea Taste Good – Tips and Recommendations

How to make Green Tea Taste Good – Welcome to the world of green tea, a beverage known for its numerous health benefits and refreshing taste. While some of you may find its natural flavour a slightly bitter or grassy, trust me, it is one of the best drink you could find which rich in antioxidants and exceptional health benefits. So, like legends say, good things can’t be retrieved easily. In this article, we’ll unlock those good things and the secret to making the perfect cup of green tea that not only benefits your health but also tantalizes your taste buds.

From brewing techniques to flavour enhancements, I’ve got everything covered in this article. Without further ado, let’s sip in!

Understanding the Wonders – What is Green Tea?

Right! starting off with some technical bits. Green tea is a type of tea which made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart from other types of tea is its minimal oxidation process. After the leaves are harvested, they are quickly heated or steamed to prevent oxidation, preserving their natural green colour and fresh flavour. his process helps retain the natural antioxidants and other beneficial compounds found in the tea leaves. Looking for more detailed technical content? Here you go!

    Green Tea Benefits

Here are some interesting key benefits of drinking green tea every day.

    • Rich in antioxidants: Green tea is packed with antioxidants called catechins, which help protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including certain types of cancer.
    • Boosts metabolism and aids weight loss: Green tea has been found to increase metabolism and fat oxidation, making it a popular choice for those looking to manage their weight. It can also help suppress appetite and enhance the body’s ability to burn calories.
    • Improves brain function: The caffeine and amino acid L-theanine present in green tea can have a synergistic effect, improving brain function and enhancing focus, alertness, and mood. It also provides a more balanced and sustained energy compared to coffee.
    • Supports heart health: Regular consumption of green tea has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. It helps lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and improve blood vessel function, thereby promoting a healthy heart.
    • Enhances immune system: Green tea contains various compounds that have antimicrobial and immune-stimulating properties, helping to strengthen the immune system and fight against infections.

    • May lower the risk of type 2 diabetes: Some studies suggest that green tea consumption may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, potentially reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
    • Supports healthy aging: The powerful antioxidants in green tea, along with its anti-inflammatory properties, can help protect against age-related diseases and promote healthy aging.

Mastering the Art – How to make the best Green Tea

We are into the important subject now! To achieve the perfect cup of green tea, follow these steps:

    1. Water temperature: Heat water to about 175°F (80°C). This temperature ensures that the delicate flavours of green tea are not compromised. If the water is too hot, it can result in a bitter taste.
    2. Tea-to-water ratio: Use 1 teaspoon of loose green tea leaves or 1 tea bag per 8-ounce (240ml) cup. Adjust the amount based on personal preference and desired strength. Remember, using too much tea can overpower the flavour, while using too little may result in a weak brew.
    3. Steeping time: Steep the tea for 2-3 minutes. Avoid over steeping, as it can result in a bitter taste. If you prefer a stronger flavour, you can steep for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute, but be cautious not to exceed 5 minutes, as it may lead to an unpleasant taste.
    4. Straining or removing the tea bag: Once steeped, remove the tea leaves or tea bag from the cup to prevent over-extraction and maintain the desired flavour. Leaving the tea in contact with the water for too long can make it bitter.
    5. Drinking the Green Tea while it’s hot: Last but not the least, drink it while it is hot. This is the main objective if you are drinking green tea just for weight reduction.

Elevating the Taste – How to make Green Tea Taste Good

Onto the fun stuffs! To make green tea interesting to drink you can try one or all the below steps, but not together..lol!

    1. Add natural sweeteners: I like to keep it plain as I am primarily going after weight reduction. But if you are looking for some sweeteners, you can go for this one. Enhance the flavour of green tea by adding a touch of pure honey, stevia, or pure maple syrup. These natural sweeteners complement the tea’s grassy notes without overpowering its delicate taste. Try experimenting with different amounts to find the perfect balance that suits your preference.
    2. Citrus zing: Squeeze a fresh lemon or lime into your green tea to add a refreshing tang. Citrus fruits lend a vibrant twist and help balance any bitterness. You can also try adding a few slices of citrus fruits directly to the tea while steeping for a subtle infusion of flavour.
    3. Herbal infusions: I do this sometimes for a change. Add a few fresh mint leaves, slices of ginger, or sprigs of lemongrass to your cup while steeping. These additions infuse their unique flavours into green tea, creating delightful variations. Not only do they add a burst of freshness, but they also offer their own health benefits.
    4. Fruit fusion: Because, why not? Create a fusion by adding slices of fruits like strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or oranges to your green tea. The subtle sweetness and fruity essence transform the tea into a delightful tropical or berry-infused treat. For an extra twist, try muddling the fruits gently before adding them to the tea for enhanced flavour extraction.
    5. Explore floral notes: I am yet to try this one, but you can Delight your senses by infusing green tea with floral flavours. Experiment with adding a few dried lavender buds, rose petals, or jasmine flowers to your tea. These floral accents can create a soothing and aromatic experience, making each sip a sensory pleasure.

Tips and Tricks for Green Tea Enthusiasts

Are you still looking for more tips and tricks? No worries! Here you go!

    1. Quality matters: Trust me! This really make a difference. Invest in high-quality green tea leaves or tea bags to make the green tea taste less bitter. My best suggestion here is, opt for organic options to get the best product and to minimize exposure to pesticides. if you are getting the tea leaves, look for teas with vibrant green leaves and a fresh aroma, as these are indicators of quality.
    2. Freshness is key: Again, another big one. Ensure the tea you purchase is fresh, as stale tea can result in a bad taste and smell. Check the packaging for the harvest date or opt for loose tea from a reputable source. Also, buying the tea bags in smaller quantities and storing it properly can help maintain its freshness for a longer period.
    3. Experiment with brewing techniques: For me, it’s the classic way I mentioned above. But, do explore different brewing methods to discover new flavours and aromas. Try the traditional Chinese gongfu style, which involves multiple short infusions, or delve into the world of Matcha preparation, whisking powdered green tea into a frothy delight. Each method brings its own unique characteristics to the cup, allowing you to explore the full potential of green tea.
    4. Proper storage: Like I’ve mentioned earlier in the second point, store green tea in an airtight container away from light, moisture, and strong odours to maintain its freshness and preserve its delicate flavours. Also, avoid placing it near spices or coffee, as tea can absorb strong odours.

American Born Chinese Review: An Ode to the Chinese Culture

American Born Chinese Review – We live in a global society where opportunities more often than not have depended on what color one’s skin and where they come from. In this society, anything apart from the one main standard is dubbed as crazy and unimportant. In places like the United States which is often considered a melting pot of global cultures, it is disheartening to see the utter disrespect and veiled racism happening against those of color. There is a stereotypical representation which is swept under the rug saying that it is a joke or that it is simply very exotic.

Hollywood seldom gave recognition or opportunities to the people who wanted to start a career in acting. There was always one stereotypical role which essayed the person speaking in a heavy accent English, wearing clothes which were cheaply made, sporting spectacles and being an ace in the academics, especially mathematics and science. In the recent months we have seen a shift in those patterns. Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won the Oscars and set a new precedent in the film industry. People have become more sensitive to the veiled racism that is deeply rooted in the society. Patterns of racist behaviour are being actively identified and fought against to make the society truly balanced and equal.

In line with the AAPI month, Disney brought a new and interesting series which celebrates Chinese culture and also comments on the veiled racism in the society. The series is titled ‘American Born Chinese’ and is adapted from comic books series of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. This show tells the story of a teenage Asian-American boy named Jin Wang as navigates high school and fights heavenly bodies.

    American Born Chinese Summary

Jin Wang is a typical high school going teenage boy who is a fan of manga, like soccer, is shy around girls, is socially awkward and most of all, seeks validation from his fellow seemingly ‘cool’ classmates. He is the son of Simon and Christine Wang, a Chinese immigrant couple. Having grown up in an American society and detached from his roots, Jin is more American than Chinese and it is clearly seen in his behaviour as well.

The Monkey King aka Sun Wukong is one of the most popular tales from the Chinese legends of the 16th Century. In the show, we see that these characters from the legends have reached the mortal world with an agenda of their own. Sun Wukong’s son Wei Chen had a dream and he came to Earth to fulfill it. Wei Chen is Jin’s opposite – he is loud, bold and not shy to speak about his hobbies in public.

He befriends Jin much to Jin’s chagrin, but eventually makes Jin understand what is going on around them. Jin comes to his senses and helps Wei Chen out with his best friend Anuj’s help. But fighting Ni Mowang was only a temporary relief. There lie more challenges for Jin Wang as he gets more involved with the heavenly bodies.

    American Born Chinese Review

‘American Born Chinese’ is a great attempt at translating the page to the screen. The narration style echoes an ode to the Chinese and Chinese American community. The episodes open with English and Mandarin lines from the folklore. The graphic effects with Sun Wukong’s staff and Guanyin’s magic are quite delightful to see on screen. Ben Wang does a great job as the socially awkward teenager Jin. Michelle Yeoh appears as Guanyin and displays a balanced portrayal of a goddess and a mentor. Ke Huy Quan as Jamie Yao serves as a catalyst to point out the veiled form of racism that the community is subject to even today.

The story is set in modern day America and it is quite interesting to see characters from legends and myths dressed in modern attire and utilising modern equipment. Guanyin’s obsession with the coffee table from IKEA is humorous in nature and it serves as a great element of relatability as the Swedish furniture brand is known for its appealing furniture but difficult manuals. It is a running joke among those who have had run-ins with setting up DIY IKEA furniture.

Throughout the show we see Jin’s parents involved in various activities to keep in touch with their roots. They switch between Mandarin and English when conversing with each other. Jin barely understands Mandarin so he just sticks to English. Wei Chen, Sun Wukong, Guanyin, Ni Mowang and other characters also speak Mandarin and English. The switch between the languages is interesting because when the characters want to make a heartfelt expression, they speak their mother tongue but otherwise resort to English as the story is anyway set in America.

Overall, the show serves as a heartfelt ode to the Chinese (and also Asian) heritage and roots. Most of us have grown up watching American superheroes and European legends, so it is quite endearing to see Asian legends also coming to the forefront. The show is a beacon to the Asian American community and a message to the world at large that Asians can be much more than typecast characters. Everyone is equal and deserves equal opportunity in all fields. It also works as an inspiration to the young generation that the mangas are also ‘cool’ and beyond just nerdy.

Will American Born Chinese Get a Season 2?

Not sure for now. The possibility of a American Born Chinese season 2 hasn’t been confirmed by Disney Plus or the creators of the show yet.

Will there be a sequel to American Born Chinese?

Yes, to those who want to see more of the American born Chinese teenager Jin Wang and his adventures with the heavenly figures, might just get their wish granted! In the finale episode of season one, we see that Iron Fan has abducted Jin’s parents and threatens Jin to follow her if he wants to see them again. In season one, Jin and Wei Chen were battling against Ni Mowang aka the Bull Demon and in the sequel they might be seen pitted against Iron Fan. Wei Chen left for Heaven after the battle but since Jin’s parents are in danger, it is only natural that he will come down again to help his best friend.

    XO Kitty Review

XO, Kitty takes us to Seoul, South Korea where Kitty enrolls in Korea Independant Seoul School (KISS), a school which her mom also went to for a year. Going to KISS is Kitty’s way of connecting with her mother whom she never met. She relieved those moments from her mother’s photobook, and also met with her first love Kim Dae Hoon aka Dae. Kitty has been writing letters to Dae for four years now. She and Dae fell in love over letters.

Kitty makes a plan to spend a whole school year with Dae and enrolls for a scholarship at KISS, the same school that Dae also coincidentally attends. Thus begins her journey as the new student in a foreign land. She barely knows the language, and is not well acquainted with the Korean culture which makes her a butt of jokes amongst her peers. She meets with Dae and his friends Min Ho, Q and also his ‘girlfriend’ Yuri. Yuri comes from an elite family and is also Principal Lim’s daughter. She has a secret of her own and a slight love-hate relationship with Kitty. Kitty’s room mate has a 24/7 video game streaming on, and the room is littered with scraps which makes Kitty’s life in the dorms very difficult. She moves into the boys’ dorms and shares the room with Dae, Minho and Q unbeknownst to the staff.

After a series of mishaps and misadventures, Kitty and Dae are finally together but Kitty has found a new side to herself. She has feelings for Yuri, the same girl who was in a fake relationship with Dae initially to save her family’s reputation. In the midst of finding the love of her life, Kitty also comes across a secret from her mother’s past which leads her to a new tangent of discoveries.

XO, Kitty is a decent watch if you’re looking for something to spend your time on over the weekend or a quick binge. Each episode is not longer than 30 minutes which makes it just fine to indulge. Since the show is set in Korea, we find a lot of cliches and fan service moments throughout the story. Some would argue that the show brings in a mix of K-drama to the typical American teenage drama and they won’t be wrong.

There are all the classical tropes that one would find in a rom com teenage drama. We have a love triangle between Dae, Kitty and Min Ho, but I feel that somewhere Min Ho falls short in proving to be a heartthrob second lead which is synonymous in K-dramas. The saccharine-laced dialogues make it pressingly obvious about the plot that would unfold and it chips away a tiny bit of the charm that the show promises. But then no teenage story is complete without such cheesy, corny and complicated instances – both in reality and in fiction.

The landscape and cinematography of the show is pleasing to the eye given the pastel shades and eye-catching fashion. There are K-pop songs peppered in for each pivotal sequence including the leads’ entry and it was a delight to find artists like JEON SOMI, SEVENTEEN make the cut. The supporting cast acts as a great buffer to the main story, providing adequate room for the leads to shine and also coming in as the pillar to keep the story running.

    Xo, Kitty Ending

The finale episode of the show leaves the audience with a promise that there will be a sequel, given the way the circumstances have turned out to be. Kitty and Dae have broken up, Kitty almost confessed her feelings to Yuri, Kitty also got expelled from KISS because she was living in the boys’ dorm and broke rules of her scholarship. Yuri calls her mother to not expel Kitty from the school, but Kitty is already on the flight home. But since she leaves during the break, it will only make sense that some winds of change will flow in that duration which will allow our dear leading lady to come back to KISS and complete her journey there.

Kathal – A Jackfruit Mystery Trailer

    Kathal Movie Plot

Kathal is a political and satirical Hindi comedy drama, that revolves around two stolen valuable uncle Hong jackfruits from MLA Pateira’s (Vijay Raaz) garden and the inspector Mahima ( Sanya Malhotra ) and her team looking after it. They suspect the gardener who was fired days before the jackfruit theft, while the gardener himself reaches the police station to file a missing person complaint on his daughter Amiya. The story revolves around two questions, whether the jackfruits were found and what happened to Amiya.

3 Reasons to Watch Kathal A Jackfruit Mystery Movie

    1. A Satirical Comedy Drama

There is so much of satire in the entire movie, that jells good with the script. The characters have a perfect comical thread in them, that makes the movie feel like a perfect dress woven with good screenplay, writing and performance. The comic scenes don’t feel forced rather it feels perfect and connects with the plot.

    2. Breaking Stereotypical Thoughts on Jobs of a Couple

The film shows inspector Mahima and her constable boyfriend Saurabh face a conflict just because the woman in this relationship is in a higher rank at work than the man. This particular reason throws a wall in-between their relationship but later they find a way to break the wall.

    3. Breaking Stereotypical Thoughts on Caste System

Many of us are progressing forward in the society, throwing the long lasting bias on caste system that has been dividing people into upper and lower caste. This film perfectly shows that caste system does exist in our society and how the lower caste sometimes become victim for the things that they don’t commit. But, the film also shows how a person from lower caste like Mahima is now an inspector, who aspires to break these stereotypes, treat people as people and not on the basis of which caste they belong to.

    Kathal Movie Review
Kathal Movie Review: A Jackfruit Mystery - Here are 3 reasons to watch it

This film also shows that a lot of girls who went missing in the village was not found rather they only exist in the photographs in the missing person records. Mahima uses this as an opportunity to find the gardener’s missing daughter Amiya and also hopes to find these missing girls someday.

Sanya Malhotra as Mahima, is convincing in her role as not only a determined and strict police officer but also as someone who is compassionate and someone who could solve puzzles of this mystery easily. Anant V Joshi as Saurabh, a struggling constable did a good performance. A brewing romance between the inspector and constable looks decent and not very exaggerated.

MLA Pateira is an old school superstitious person who is greedy to expand his political position with a very clumsy family and a spoiled child. Vijay Naaz as Pateira really fits like a perfect button on a shirt. Rajpaal Yadav with his comical appearance and dialogues, brings out quite the comical elements. Music was good with lyrics connected to the story and situation, interwoven with the film.

Though the film, breaks certain preconceived notions in the society, it does go with what the society wants people to do at some parts of the film. Some scenes were a bit too lengthy and the film does not answer all the questions it started with. Did they find Uncle Hong Kathals? Watch the film to find out.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review – I was just scrolling through Netflix wondering what to watch. Suddenly, Netflix played me an excerpt from this film. I was intrigued. It showed Debika Chatterjee (Rani Mukerjee), running towards a car that had two women, take debika’s children away from her. Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Trailer

    Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review

The film begins with this excerpt and shows a happy couple Debika Chatterjee and her husband Anirudh Chatterjee(Anirbhan Bhattacharya) happily moving to Norway from India as immigrants. The film starts with a beautiful song show casing Debika’s pregnancy and her two very beautiful children, Shubh and Suchi. Shubh is a happy little boy and Suchi is a sweet little baby girl who is just five years old.

    Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review

At the beginning two women Matilda and Sia from Norway’s Child Welfare Services, are visiting their home for a 24 week evaluation to term the parents, that they are fit to raise their children in the best way. If they are considered unfit, then the children would be taken from their biological parents and given to foster parents in Norway. The same happens to Debika and Anirudh. Norway’s Child Welfare Services takes Shubh and Suchi away from their parents to a foster shelter.

The reasons given by them was that, Debika force feeds her children with fingers, she keeps black dot using her kajal, the children doesn’t sleep in their own bed, Anirudh doesn’t help Debika in household chores, they have a history of domestic violence and Debika is mentally unfit to raise their children. What happens next is, how a mother’s natural instinct and her love for her children made her go through all sorts of odd and how she fought against a nation, her own husband to bring her children back.

    Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review

Rani Mukherjee, the star that she is! After a long time, seeing her performance, blue my mind. I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing this role. What a performance, oh man! Her emotions and acting was so raw, unfiltered, honest and vulnerable. Her struggle and emotions could be seen right through her eyes. You could feel the pain she was having through your screen. I’ve one word for her, Incredible.

Jim Sarbh, a very talented performer. His role as a lawyer Daniel Singh Ciupek is outstanding. He had a neutral expression yet a concern to Debika and her love towards her children. The scenes with Debika and Daniel are a treat to watch especially as they both have an opposite character traits in the movie. Anirbhan Bhattacharya(Anirudh Chatterjee), makes his hindi language debut, did a good performance to his role, being a cold husband. Balaji Gauri as Sunaina Pratap, Barun Chanda as Abhijeet Dutta and Bodhisattwa Majumder as Debika’s father delivered a very beautiful performance.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review: Heart Warming Tale of a Mother's Victory Against a Nation

The cinematography was amazing, there were so many heart warming shots showing a delicate mother and her children. Few scenes will definitely bring tears to your eyes. Music was done by Amit Trivedi, it was good, with songs mostly being emotionally attached to lyrics. Special mention to Neena Gupta who played Vasudha Kamat, who turned the entire story towards the truth.

This story revolves around a lot of emotions, honest actions, motherly instinct and so much more, its a drama with roller coaster of emotions. Though it feels a bit lengthy and dragged during some point of time, the emotions won’t let you leave the film halfway.

The Inheritance Games Characters – The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

    Who is Avery?

Avery kylie Grambs, is a teenager from Connecticut who lives with her elder sister, both of them trying to make ends meet. She sleeps in her car on days she doesn’t want to face her sister’s boyfriend. Heirs to the empire, the four brothers Nash, Grayson, Jameson, Xander exude confidence and power. The brothers had a special relationship with their grandfather. Every Saturday Tobias Hawthorne would arrange a series of puzzles, games and riddles for his grandsons to solve. It was his way of shaping his grandsons into capable individuals.

“If there’s one thing the Hawthorne family isn’t, it’s fine. They were a twisted, broken mess before you got here, and they’ll be a twisted, broken mess once you’re gone.” To talk of the Hawthorne brothers, Nash the eldest of them is not interested in Hawthorne empire. He has a savior complex.

“Nash is a bit of a nomad. He leaves. He wanders. He finds some hole-in-the-wall place to bartend for a while, and then, like a moth to the flame, he comes back—usually with one or two hopeless souls in tow.” Grayson is the heir apparent. He is dutiful, protects his family before anything or anyone else. He knows his power and the responsibility that comes with it.

“The world bent to the will of Grayson Hawthorne. What money couldn’t buy him, those eyes probably did.” Jameson Hawthorne, the one who is in constant need of thrill, answers and loves the games. “Jameson Winchester Hawthorne is hungry. He’s looking for something. He’s been looking for it since the day he was born”

Xander the youngest of them is a certified genius. With patents under his name he is a robotic genius. He is the kindest Hawthorne who loves scones, stories and the best one among them. I am a human Rube Goldberg machine,” he said. “I do simple things in complicated ways

From the second chapter the question remains. The secrets unfold and answers are found in a series of 3 books. The Hawthorne House is a mansion with secret passageways, tunnels and answers written on walls. I absolutely loved how the story progresses, with every chapter uncovering answers to the puzzle that Grandpa Hawthorne had created.

    What I liked:

I finished the series in three days. Avery the protagonist is beautifully written. She struggles with the insecurity that she is not special in any way. Every character that makes an appearance has a story and history of their own. The story is fast paced. The bond between the Hawthorne brothers wasn’t particularly conventional. I loved the scenes between the four of them, especially the ones with Xander. Jameson and Grayson’s story before Avery came into their lives: the mistakes they made, their remorse, the guilt, the consequences they had to face was great to read.

The Inheritance Games Summary and Review | The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

In the inheritance games, you will see a triangle between Avery, Jameson and Grayson. The readers root for both of them, I know I did. There isn’t anything in particular I don’t like in the first book. It’s a great start to the series. It ends on a cliffhanger, you will want to start the next book immediately.

This book is definitely worth your time, If you love solving puzzles and finding answers to the mystery along with our characters this will keep you on your toes and constantly guessing. But if you are someone who likes watching them run around for missing pieces you will definitely enjoy this ride.

    Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This is a solid 4.5 from me and Just A Library, only because I guessed the ending. My brain is constantly creating scenarios and working, that is probably why I could guess. Otherwise it’s an amazing read.

The Hypocrisy of Two Nation Theory

Two Nation Theory – Partition’s bloodstained legacy leaves India’s half of the past generation paralysed out of fear and trauma which they had to go through because of the politicians (or, the leaders) of that time along with our long time oppressors – the British. When the British ultimately departed India after three centuries, the peninsula was divided into two sovereign nation states: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Suddenly, one of the largest migrations in the history of mankind began, with millions of Muslims trekking to West and East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh), while millions of Hindus and Sikhs went the other way. A lot of individuals never made it.

Cultures that had lived alongside for over centuries assailed one another in a terrible eruption of communal warfare, with Hindus and Sikhs on one side and Muslims on the other – a narrative being played out that was as shocking as it was unusual. Genocides, Burning, Forced Conversions of Religions, Home Invasions that turned out to be absolutely harrowing, and dreadful stories of Sexual Assault were common in Punjab and Bengal, two regions on India’s borders with West and East Pakistan, respectively. It is estimated that over eighty thousand women were raped, and many of them were deformed or mutilated as a result.

The Hypocrisy of Two Nation Theory

The ultimate failure of the Two Nation theory into its utopian practicality left cultures and people to be resentful of one another and their hatred for each other still persists today. What was supposed to ‘benefit’ the two communities turned out to be their worst nightmare possible.

The division of Bengal in 1905 was the British’s initial move in destroying Hindu-Muslim unity. And after that a whole lot of events followed which made the differences between both the communities grow wider and gradually they became resentfully agitated with the way it was going. A resurrected Hindu aggression posed a threat to Islam and its decreasing population in India.

It was not helping the fact that there were tensions among the Congress and the All India Muslim League for their contradictory statements and sentiments. So, Muhammad Iqbal offered a picture of an autonomous state for the big Muslim-majority regions of northern India in his Allahabad address (1930) which prompted Muhammad Ali Jinnah along with other Muslim politicians to promote the concept that religion is the deciding element in establishing the nationality of Indian Muslims. The fate was sealed when Chaudhri Ahmet Ali came up with the word ‘Pakistan’ and the unavoidable circumstances led to its eventual existence.

According to the Two-Nation hypothesis, Hindus and Muslims in India represent two independent groups that cannot coexist within the same state without controlling and discriminating against each other, or without continual strife. This served as the primary reason for the partition of India in 1947. Jinnah wanted a nation in which he argued that the Hindus and Muslims who live in the broad region are not two groups but rather two countries in many ways.

Furthermore, Hinduism and Islam are not, strictly speaking, separate faiths, but rather two independent social regimes. As a result, they are irreconcilable with one another and require their own region to live. Ultimately, Hindus and Muslims adhere to two opposing religious doctrines with unique genealogies. They cannot prosper as a community because they adhere to two opposing schools of thinking. According to the argument, Muslims are a distinct country with their own culture, traditions, values, and civilisation. By 1939, Jinnah had come to believe in the existence of a Muslim nation on the Indian subcontinent.

As a result, India’s liberation was cemented with doom: the Curse of Partition, which separated the undivided nation into India and Pakistan. Jinnah and his Two Nations Thesis are openly blamed for the unnecessary ‘Partition.’ This not only brought a whole line of generational trauma never to be recovered from but also, the after effects of partition still remain in the ever growing animosity which threatens world peace.

Albeit coming into action, the entire process of dividing a single nation with such peculiar intentions is still debated and interpreted among many scholars. The main flawed explanation for the division still remains to be based upon religious identity rather than other factors: The two nation theory was based on the assumption that religious identity was the most important factor that determined a person’s national identity. However, this was a flawed assumption as there were other factors such as language, culture, and geography that were equally important in defining a person’s national identity. In conclusion, the two nation theory was a flawed and hypocritical ideology that ignored the diversity within Indian society and promoted a narrow-minded view of national identity.

A Tourist’s Guide To Love Movie Review

‘A Tourist’s Guide To Love’ has all the typical elements of a romcom movie. The movie has leads who are contrasts to each other, an ex-boyfriend of our female lead, the charm of an exotic vacation romance, heart-warming experiences in a foreign locale and a vibrant supporting cast who play small roles to bring our leads together.

What makes ‘A Tourist’s Guide To Love’ a delightful watch is the banter between the leads and how the story progresses at a steady pace. Sure, there is a percentage of predictability but that only adds in to the charm of the viewing experience. Our leads are complete contrasts to each other, but the way they help each other grow is remarkable to see.

The supporting cast has stories of their simmering on the side without overshadowing our leads. The mix of supporting characters is interesting for they each are a representation of a modern value, something which was often missing from the earlier romcoms.

Vietnam has been one of the most rapidly rising popular international travel destinations. The visual appeal of the ancient and modern Vietnam with an occasional short history lesson add a delightful flavour to the story. We get to see the traditional festival, traditional houses, and also see the ever-so-busy and crowded of the cityside in Vietnam.

The movie does not put an international location in a stereotype, despite Amanda showing reluctance to cross a road or ride on a two-wheeler. Her reluctance stems from having stayed in streets that ply with strict signals, crossings and the immediate availability of a taxi service. Sinh’s encouragement to try something new brings her out of her shell and makes her see life and a different life style in a new light.

All in all, ‘A Tourist’s Guide To Love’ is a must-watch romcom from the list of movies that Netflix has to offer. The movie boasts of a stunning landscaping of Vietnam which is bound to make you want to visit the beautiful country. The soundtrack artfully supports the ongoing storyline and aligns with the mood which makes watching the movie a great immersive experience.

JAL gives ‘A Tourist’s Guide To Love’ a solid 4.5 out of 5 for its blissful story and wonderful execution.

One More Time Netflix Review: Let’s go back to the Y2K era

One More Time Netflix Review – Life is what you make of it, life is what you believe. Sometimes in life it happens that you make certain mistakes in the past, which you regret making. There is no going back to correct said mistakes, and oftentimes there is no resolution for it either. Second chances are but rare and one should grab them when they get these second chances. The story we’ll be looking at today is one such story of a 40-year-old woman named Amelia who gets to go back to her 18th birthday and correct the wrongs in her past. ‘One More Time’ is a Swedish fantasy comedy which was released on Netflix on April 21, 2023.

One More Time 2023 Movie Review and Summary

The movie starts with our protagonist, Amelia (played by Hedda Stiernstedt), at her job and talking to her colleague. It is her birthday on that day and she gets fired on the same day. Dejected at the turn of events, especially on her birthday, Amelia heads out of the store she worked at and goes into a bar. As she is drowning her misery in alcohol her former friend Fiona (played by Tove Edfeldt) drops by the bar to pick up a few pizzas for a birthday party. The birthday party is none other than Fiona’s.

Amelia and Fiona share their birthdays, and were tight friends once. But eventually the two grew apart in high school, never to get back to being friends. Many words are unsaid between the two and their encounter is anything but awkward. Amelia is reminded of the time capsule that she and Fiona had put with some letters and knickknacks to open on their 18th birthday. Fiona heads out to dig the time capsule out.

As fate would have it, a gust of wind knocks Fiona’s letter from the time capsule out of Amelia’s hands. As Amelia is running after it, she is knocked unconscious by a truck. When she wakes up, she wakes up on her 18th birthday. At first, she is unsure of her surroundings, but soon she realizes that she has gone into the past and is reliving her 18th birthday over and over. She tries to make things right, and works out all the chinks, but no matter what she does, she is unable to go back to her present.

When she eventually does go back to her present, it is because she figured out that the person she hurt the most was Fiona, who was her dearest friend once but Amelia completely ignored her once she (Amelia) befriended a few of the ‘cool’ kids in their high school.

Back in the present, Amelia wakes up in her disheveled avatar and heads to meet Fiona at her birthday party. She also meets with Max, her ex-boyfriend from high school whose truck hit her in the present. Slight hilarity ensues as Amelia is embarrassed by her approach, but the two long lost friends soon talk things over and reunite.

    One More Time Netflix Review

If you’re looking to go back to the Y2K nostalgia, then ‘One More Time’ is a good choice. The movie, despite being set in Sweden, shows how the teenage fashion and lifestyle across the globe was similar. There were over the top bling clothing and accessories, a rambunctious splash of neon, and of course the classic goth and grunge. The high school system was pretty much the same as well, with the students divided between the ‘cool’ kids, the ‘drama club’ kids and the ‘nerds’. It transports the viewers, especially those who lived in the original Y2K times, back to their pasts. There are less modern movies these days which actually have such an apt representation of the classic Y2K lifestyle.

Apart from its colorful nostalgia, the movie does hold a message for its viewers. It is all about getting the second chance to repair a broken relationship. The love between the two friends was deep until one of them faded away into a new world. But despite Amelia’s distancing, Fiona did not stop loving her. Fiona, as we know, is a lesbian character. The hints for the same were dropped from the beginning, and it was only until Amelia checks Fiona’s letter that she realized what she had really lost. Amelia’s sexual identity is not fully established in the movie, but it won’t be wrong to say that there is more than just a platonic love between the two close knit friends. The movie’s makers makes use of close frame shots to see the character’s emotions clearly in the scene. There are certain shots which are taken from afar but that is only to show the landscape the story is set in.

‘One More Time’ is a movie that you can watch over a chill weekend or perhaps on a rather boring weekday. You will get to listen to a few global hit tracks from back in the day, and who knows, perhaps also find your second chance to reconnect with an old friend or an old flame?

JAL gives ‘One More Time’ a solid 3.5 out of 5 for its story and execution.

‘Queens on the Run’ is a fun one-time watch, perfect for a girls’ night out. This Spanish-language movie packs a fun punch of laughter, struggle, love and friendship. It begins by introducing us to the fabulous four women – Paty, Marilu, Estrella and Famela – whom we will be following on a rollercoaster journey to re-discovering their true selves.

We find the quartet taking a stray chicken under their wing, jamming to pop hits in the car, flirting with men, and also fighting off a criminal, all in a span of 96 minutes. ‘Queens on the Run’ is quite a funny and apt title for the film because each of the four characters in the films are queens in their own right. While Paty, Marilu and Famela married seek resolution for their marital woes, Estrella the on the other hand is looking for someone to call her ‘beau’.

We also see a small conflict resolution amongst the friends. The comic timing is on point and does not overshadow the issues at hand. While the movie can be passed of as a comic caper, it does shine light on women who are stuck in loveless marriages, or marriages which have lost their spark over the years. It clearly sends a message across that whatever the issues are, a healthy communication with your partner can help resolve most of those. Sometimes, all it takes is one wakeup call to realise if one’s efforts all this while have gone to waste or if there is something left to salvage and rebuild upon.

Sure, one can argue that all that is shown in the movie is not plausible on a regular basis. But then again, this movie is not something which runs on the ‘regular’ fuel. While we do have conflict resolution and a solid depiction of female friendship, the encounters our characters go through are no less than plucked out of an imaginative tale.

As the movie progresses, we see noticable character development, and also peek into the strong bond between the four women. The pacing of the film is not too fast, which makes it suitable for a quick binge. The color palette is sprinkled with brights shades and pastels, reflecting the free-spirited nature of the film. The red convertible that the quartet take for their road trip is classic must-have for a movie of this genre. All in all, ‘Queens on the Run’ is that chick-lit movie that you didn’t know you wanted. It transcends the barriers of language and touches upon the relative tones of female friendship and marriage.

    Queens on the Run Cast

Martha Higareda stars as Paty Fenix, a trophy wife to an arrogant and self-centred assemblyman Esteban. Alejandra Ambrosi stars as Marilu Davila, a house-wife who sacrificed her dreams and aspirations for her husband and children. Then there is Valeria Vera who plays Estrella Solares, the only one not yet married amongst the quartet. She is funky, quirky and still looking out for love. Lastly, we have Paola Nunez who plays Famela Guerra, a complete workaholic who disregards her husband and is on a quest to get pregnant. Each of these characters are different from one another, but when they come together, it is like they collectively share the same brain to make any decision.

Queens on the Run – JAL Rating

JAL gives ‘Queens on the Run’ 3 out of 5 stars for its content, execution and entertainment levels.

    Rating: 3 out of 5.
