PRIDE MONTH – Every year, since 2000, the entire month of June is celebrated as the PRIDE MONTH. The meaning of Pride may be subjective, but it generally accepted that it means acceptance. Acceptance of who you are and also being proud of the same. This month-long event commemorates and celebrates the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Queer) LGBTQ+ community. After years of ignorance/bully/forced being themselves in secrecy, this event gives LGBTQ+ people the deserved equality, dignity, and acceptance as a social group.
On 6 September 2018, India decriminalized homosexuality. The Supreme Court did this through a historic judgment calling Section 377 “Unconstitutional”. Although there were many mixed reactions, the queers were more than delighted! Some said “We’re finally given the full fundamental rights to live” while some other said “The country has finally given us Oxygen to breathe”
PRIDE MONTH
It’s great that they got their legal acceptance, but what about social acceptance?
There are 4.8 million transgender people, and the gay community constitutes roughly 13% of our population. But, do the society look and treat those people the same way you and I are?
Let’s take a quick journey, back to the past to find the roots of this discrimination.
There’s a plethora of evidence that in Ancient India there have been many references to homosexuality.
Ancient Hindu texts or preaches containing homosexual characters and themes in them.
Svairini – Term for an independent woman (Also interpreted as a Lesbian) who refuses to marry a man
PRIDE MONTH - Celebrating People as they are🏳️🌈- LGBTQ+
Mention of “Vikriti Evam Prakriti” in Rigveda (meaning what seems unnatural is also natural)
Bhagavat Geeta made references to homosexuals [Canto 3.20.23-37]
We were a country that practiced and also celebrated Homosexuality, even before the rest of the world gave women freedom or equality! So, when did we start criminalizing the acts of homosexuality? If you haven’t guessed it by now, the answer is when the British set their foot here. When they invaded India, they also brought in their homophobia along and criminalized homosexuality in the 19th Century.
Coming back to the current scenario.
Yes! Section 377 is scrapped and homosexuality has been legally accepted. But, the fact is social acceptance hasn’t kept pace with the law yet.
Coming out in India is still not easy! It is very rare to discuss openly or in families. There’s a constant fear of rejection. The first reaction of many families, even today, is disbelief, and immediately thinking about what the society/relatives would say if they found out. They then try convincing themselves that this is a phase that can be cured. Of course, they consult astrologers, pandits, and priests. Might even suggest psychiatric treatment to change who you are. Some sections of the society may be accepting and welcoming, but they’re too small, to revolutionize our homophobic friends and family.
So, what can people do?
Attend pride rallies, post on social media, but is it really reaching the target audience with almost no coverage on mainstream? Prior to reaching acceptance, there’s another main enemy to be conquered – “Awareness”. How many people are aware that Homosexuality isn’t a choice someone has made and refrain from ridiculing saying “Avana Nee” or it’s equivalent in their regional language? Start with Your family to make a difference! In fact, while penning this piece down, I thought to myself how my family has never discussed this topic and that it might be weird to do so. As the least possible contribution to this vital movement, we the 5 authors from JAL, will initiate a conversation with our parents, ask them for their opinions and let them know that the LGBTQ community deserves acceptance and equality.

Tribute to the Father of Indian Economy – Shri P V Narasimha Rao 🙏
At a time when non-cooperation and khilafat movements were in full swing; a boy was born in an agrarian brahmin family on 28th June 1921. Who would have thought this very same boy would go on to become “Father of Indian Economic Reforms” and would change the face of Indian Economy. Shri P VNarasimha Rao has served as the 9th Prime minister of India and is well known for his well-known LPG reforms.
Some people and their actions maybe just a record in history. There are some people, who, through their bold and timely decisions, become landmarks in history. They change the entire horoscope of future generations. One such person was P VNarasimha Rao who added fuel to the Economy of India. The situation in which he became the Prime Minister of India, might appear tricky to any other person; it wasn’t to this extraordinary genius. The fun fact is, this man can speak at least 18 different languages fluently. It is said that he was never in need of an interpreter during his foreign visits to various countries!
What were the Economic crises in 1990’s and How did India end up in them
Tribute to the Father of Indian Economy - Shri P V Narasimha Rao
Post-independence, India adopted a Democratic republic as the key fabric of its polity. It rejected both capitalism and socialism as its economic fabric, however. When a debate arose on which methodology to adopt, India went ahead with the hybrid model; where useful aspects of both were adopted. It was more tilted towards the Socialistic tendencies of the USSR. The Govt of India under Nehru believed that the evils left by the British can be countered with Socialism. Therefore, the Govt gave much importance to centralization in every sector. The Government controlled all aspects of the economy like production, distribution, consumption. It gave more importance to the Nationalization of resources. There was a presence of government in each and every sector.
Why did the government think so?
There were genuine fears about capitalism. British ruled India for 200 years as a capitalistic power. After this 200 years of rule, the natural and man-made resources of India were very meager and not sufficient to the whole population. In light of such widespread inequalities, the then leaders thought that only the Government would be in a position for optimal utilization of these resources. They were not ready to put them in hands of profit-minded capitalists. Thus, Indian leaders voted for Socialism in India (though only ideologically not legally).
Tribute to the Father of Indian Economy - Shri P V Narasimha Rao
India had adopted Five-year plans from the USSR. It started to plan everything centrally and did not allow much participation of Private players in many sectors especially manufacturing. The government made licenses compulsory for anyone to start a new industry(License Raj). There was rampant corruption which resulted in poor infrastructure. All important and profit-making industries like power, oil, heavy equipment were reserved only for the Public sector. However, some private firms existed, but they were strictly regulated by some of the draconian laws like MRTP and FERA
All these mentioned above led to the economic crisis in India. Most of the Indian public companies are not performing well with efficiency constraints. Indian goods and services were not competitive in World markets. We had a very low rate of exports to other countries when compared to our imports. Our foreign reserves were depleting and stood at 4 billion dollars in 1990 (today around 502 billion dollars) which wasn’t sufficient to import goods even for a week. This poor performance of industry affected employment in India and led to a paltry standard of living for Indians. Indian Economy was in dire condition with multiple problems on multiple fronts.
What are LPG reforms?
In this situation, P.V. Narasimha Rao became the PM of India in 1991. With the help of Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee, he led India to a new dawn. Narasimha Rao approached the International Monetary Fund for help. The IMF laid down certain conditions and then helped India financially. After receiving the aid, Rao decided to make India stand on its own feet. He worked out a strategy with his peers and brought out comprehensive economic reforms which are commonly known as LPG reforms.

Liberalization: The economy was freed from direct or physical control by the government. Example: License Raj was abolished, FDI (Foreign Direct Investment), and FIIs (Foreign Institutional Investors) were sanctioned, borrowing in foreign currency was permitted, etc.
Privatization: Allowed the private sector to set up more and more industries in those sectors which were previously reserved only for Govt.
Globalization: Integrated the Indian economy with other countries’ markets and improved diplomatic ties with various other countries.

Contribution of various sectors in GDP
During the pre-reforms stage, the average growth rate of India was 2.2% which was less than its Asian peers such as Indonesia, Singapore, Korea, Pakistan. After the reforms, the average growth is 5% and India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The problem of foreign currencies reserve is solved and today India possesses import capacity for 11 months(pre- reforms is 1 week).
India is today one of the vibrant economies with almost 50 billion dollars of FDIs every year.
With the help of LPG reforms and the advent of private players, the efficiency has increased in the field. This increased the quality of Indian goods and services has resulted in an increase in exports. The major beneficiary of this is the services sector which contributed almost 60% to GDP (Gross domestic product).
With integration into world markets and the economy, Indian people started taking up high paid and skilled jobs in various countries. They are earning in foreign currencies and remitting them to India (by sending to their parents, kids, etc.). Today, India is the biggest recipient of foreign remittances. Various current day programs like make in India are implemented on the lines of LPG only.
All the fruits that we are reaping today from the Indian economy are from the tree planted by the duo of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. The greatness of this duo lies not only in bringing reforms but also in implementing them smoothly without any hiccups.
This duo is definitely worthy of appreciation and all the credit for bringing fundamental changes to the Economy. P V Narasimha Rao always dreamed of a country in which people’s smiles overshadows the sun (taken from his autobiography). It is in our hands to make sure India becomes such a country which is for our own good. It’s our duty to remember the man who gave us real “Sampann Bharat” on his centenary.
I am Ek aam aadmi who likes normalcy. Teaching is my passion and being a teacher I experience a sparkle in my students’ eyes that only a teacher can see. My dream is that someday people study about me.
Our world was progressing at full speed ahead until our ship hit an iceberg. As the current scenarios, COVID-19 cases are aggravating at a faster pace, and now all eyes are pointing to the “yet to be discovered” vaccine. The lifeboat for the rescue that will provide us with the immunity to resist the novel coronavirus!! However, the feasibility of this lifeboat is uncertain until now, because obtaining resistance through a vaccine doesn’t seem to be a permanent solution for the big picture.
Then how will we bridle this?
Adaptation! It was the adaptations that enabled the entire living organisms to strive; even throughout the harsh conditions and threats that our nature unveiled. Living organisms have the capability to adapt to the situations that they meet upon their timeline.
This leads us to the question – Can humans develop an adaptive immunity over the novel coronavirus? Can the current technologically advanced human race acquire resistance against this deadly disease? Are we capable of getting the edge off in this situation? In order to answer this uncertainty, we need to turn some pages back to the evolution of life.
As we are going through an onerous trek with the pandemic that made our entire world to stand still. The discussions and research are going on about the hot topic COVID-19 as the cases are reinstating day-by-day. All nations’ governments are imposing stringent regulations on social gatherings and thereby promoting social distancing.
Now everyone knows that to keep themselves safe from the virus attack is to remain at their burrows. At the very beginning, most people were least bothered about the prevailing conditions which, in turn, worsened the case. But now those people are well aware of the consequences, which were created due to the lack of attention and efforts.
Can vaccines save us?
Various pharmaceutical companies are hustling to make vaccines for the prevention of coronavirus attacks. Almost all the research organizations are turning in their entire resources for the groundbreaking discovery for these vaccines. Although vaccines can be a temporary relaxation, we need our researchers to keenly set up a permanent fix for such outbreaks; rather than replant the human race to neighbouring planets.
Fingers crossed! Vaccines usually attribute a weakened version or dead forms of the bacteria or virus in this case. When the vaccines enter our body, it provides a false alert that the body is under attack by a foreign particle.
This triggers the synthesize of antibodies/weapons against the intruder by the innate immune system; a blueprint of the weapon will be stored in the memory cells as well.
Immunity against the novel coronavirus - Myth or truth?
Once the real threat arrives, our body defence system releases the weapons efficiently and faster than that of the innate immunity to neutralize the situation by the adaptive immune system.
The major traits of the innate immunity are to identify the cells of the host, swift action of exclusion, creating immunological memory files with the help of cytokines. Out of such vaccines, immunity for some is likely to be transferred from mother to child during birth.
The so-obtained antibodies provide the newborn with built-in resistance. Likewise, the acquired immunity could be passed onto upcoming generations in this manner which itself can be a Kick starter for evolution.
Acquired Immunity? Really?
Studies have shown that some humans are having acquired immunity for certain types of malarial parasites. This shows the acquisition of one’s adapted/ acquired immunity as well as the innate immune response to the parasite. It shows the potential of humans to evolve and adapt to the conditions.
The evidence of the ability for the acquired immune system was found in jawed fishes approximately 500 million years ago. Due to the catalytic environment, the adaptation started at the gene level that underwent gene rearrangement and gave rise to an evolved species.
Complex cellular processes like Somatic Hypermutation, Affinity Maturation along with Polyclonal B cell response can engender the evolution in earthly species.
According to WHO
In short, answers are still lacking and could be solved through imminent studies about the unknowns and anomalies. As WHO stated, it may never be wiped out entirely; so easing the restrictions will trigger subsequent waves. Social distancing, wearing a face mask, and timely usage of sanitizers remain as the primary defence against the virus attacks.
Immunity against the novel coronavirus - Myth or truth?
“We have a new virus entering the human population for the first time and therefore it is very hard to predict when we will prevail over it. This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities and this may never go away”
Micheal J Ryan, Executive Director, WHO
Klaus Stohr, a virologist who led the WHO response against SARS, as he foresees a distant future in which SARS-CoV-2, like coronaviruses of the common cold, will return to infect us every year, but our partial immunity will try to protect us from its harmful effects without the need for vaccines.
For the uncertain questions asked, God, forbid, this arises as an extinction-level event in the history of mankind. Although the human race will adapt, evolve, and acquire immunity over this deadly pandemic too…. not very soon but will overcome it undeniably!
Let’s prepare and brace ourselves for the new ‘Normal‘. Fingers crossed!!

From Zip2 to SpaceX: All about Elon Musk companies 😎
Elon Musk is truly an inspiration for many entrepreneurs and technologists for his various works starting from electric hypercars to cost-friendly space travel. No wonder he is been often referred to as the “Tony Stark” in real-life. He even made a cameo appearance in Iron Man 2 (2010) where he meets Robert Downey Jr at Monaco Grand Prix as a spectator.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Early life
His marvellous journey began at a very small age. Born in Pretoria, South Africa on June 28, 1971, as a young boy Musk seemed to be lost in his daydreams about inventions. Worried about his behaviour, Musk was subjected to hearing ability test. During his school days, he was often bullied and considered to be a short, introverted, and bookish boy. However, his keen interest and intellectual power, he was able to develop a computer game at the age of 12. This whizz-kid even made $500 for this.
As an Entrepreneur
Elon Musk’s entrepreneurial vision started while he was studying at the University of Pennsylvania, USA when Musk and a classmate rented out a 10-bedroom frat house and turned it into a nightclub. Later he founded his first company called Zip2 when he was 24. It was an online city guide, which soon was providing content for the new websites of both The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune. It was a huge success which accumulated $307 million in cash and $34 million in stocks for the company.
From Zip2 to SpaceX: All about Elon Musk companies
In 1999, Elon along with his brother Kimbal Musk found X.com, which was an online financial services/payments company by using the funds raised from the sale of Zip2. An X.com acquisition the following year led to the creation of PayPal as it is known today. Musk minted his first billion in 2002 when eBay acquired by Paypal for $1.5 billion in stock.
As a Visionary
Even before the PayPal sale, Musk was envisioning his next move including a wild plan to send mice or plants to Mars. With $100 million from the total money received from the PayPal sale, Musk founded the company known as the Space Exploration Technologies or SpaceX. Musk’s goal was to make spaceflight cheaper by a factor of 10. For this, he chose to develop reusable liquid- propellant rockets for which the concept of VTVL was introduced. This bagged contracts from NASA to handle cargo transport for the International Space Station with future plans for astronaut transport. SpaceX has made many successful launches from the Falcon 9 to the recent Crew Dragon. (You can read the full article here –SpaceX Crew Dragon – A new step towards MARS).
His futuristic vision did not end with this, some of his conglomerate firms include:
Tesla – An Automotive company which produces electric hypercars in a quest to provide sustainable renewable energy solutions.
SolarCity – An acquisition that aims to provide the world’s only integrated sustainable energy company, from energy generation to storage to transportation.
Starlink – A subsidiary to SpaceX which aims to provide low latency internet to a wider base of customers through their constellation of small-mass satellites.
The Boring Company – An initiative to provide high-speed transport using geo-technology engineering.
Hyperloop – A concept for a high-speed transportation system incorporating reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on an air cushion driven by linear induction motors and air compressors.
OpenAI – A non-profitable research wing that aims to develop safe and beneficial AI solutions to humanity.
Neuralink – A startup which tries to develop implantablebrain-machine interfaces (BMIs) by integrating the human brain with artificial intelligence.

From Zip2 to SpaceX: All about Elon Musk companies
Just as we are overwhelmed by simply reading these, Musk has had his share of hardships too. In 2008, he was almost broke when Tesla was losing money and SpaceX had trouble launching its Falcon 1 rocket. He had to sort out many problems to sustain but due to his diligence and persistence, he managed to turn the tables which made him the 31st Billionaire according to the Forbes.

Is PUBG a Chinese app? Here’s what you need to know about PUBG.
Ever since the advent of coronavirus, there’s been rising unrest and an anti-China sentiment globally. This sentiment was heightened because of the COVID-19 origin in China as well as their aggressive behaviour towards its neighbours.
However, this anti-China attitude gained higher momentum in India after the recent clash between India-China at the Galwan Valley, Ladakh which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers. Here is the link if you haven’t read about the Recent Clash between India-China.
Because of this distressing outrage, Sonam Wangchuck, founding-director of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh(3 Idiots movie was inspired from him) called to boycott the Chinese products by stating, “#BoycottMadeInChina AND USE YOUR WALLET POWER!!”. Since then, many Indian citizens have taken a stance in boycotting Chinese products. Many have removed china-based apps like TikTok, SHAREit, UC Browser, Helo from their Chinese smartphones😜. This boycotting rage has now reached the gaming world where people started to debate over the famous online multiplayer game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG.
What is PUBG?
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by the PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of the South Korean video gaming company called Bluehole Studio. The game was designed and developed by Brendan Greene, Creative Director at PUBG who also developed ARMA 2 mod DayZ: Battle Royale.
For the unknown, here’s how PUBG gameplay works. There are three modes of play – solo, duo and squad. In the squad mode, you can team up with three other players and you can get support from your team to fight or to revive when you get knocked out (which is the usual expectation🤣). The game has four types of maps – Erangel (the classic one with all terrains), Sanhok (a dense island full of trees and hills), Vikendi (Snow forest on the Adriatic sea), and Miramar (an open desert with plain and rural areas)
Is PUBG a Chinese App? Here's what you need to know about PUBG
In a game, 100 players (solo) or 25 teams (squads) will be taken by an aircraft to the battlefield island chosen by them without any weapons. The person/team can land at any place they want. There will be houses all over the island to collect supplies and ammunition that would help them survive. The map will start shrinking as a blue zone, which will force the players to relocate to a new safe zone circle inside the blue zone. Failure of this will lead to death.
The last person/team will be declared as the winner with the title “WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER”.
PUBG’s Journey to Popularity
PUBG was first released for Microsoft Windows via Steam’s early access beta program in March 2017, with a full release in December 2017. The game was also released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One via its Xbox GamePreview Program that same month and was officially released in September 2018. (source – Wikipedia)
Later, due to failed attempts to enter the Chinese market, PUBG Corporation approached Tencent Holdings LTD, a Chinese multinational conglomerate to release PUBG in China and to purchase equity in the company. Tencent accepted the offer by purchasing an 11.5% stake in the Bluehole Studio, in mid-2018. However, they released an abridged version of the original game – PUBG MOBILE by LightSpeed & Quantum Studio, an internal division of the Tencent Holdings on February 9, 2018.
By 2019, the PC and console versions of the game were sold over 60 million copies, in addition to the PUBG Mobile which has crossed more than 600 million downloads. To be precise, PUBG MOBILE has over 50 million daily active users worldwide. We don’t know to what level this has gone during the COVID-19 lockdown period😜.
Is PUBG a Chinese App?
Is PUBG a Chinese App? Here's what you need to know about PUBG
Even though the PUBG game is owned by a Korean company – Bluehole Studio, the mobile version PUBG MOBILE is developed by the Chinese company, Tencent Holdings LTD which makes it a Chinese App. Yes, we can’t deny the fact that China is getting profit from this. It is reported that the Tencent Holdings LTD earned $1.3 billion from PUBG Mobile in 2019.
Writer’s opinion
According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) data for 2018, India is importing 15.3% from China and exporting only 5.1%. In the absence of an alternative, boycotting Chinese products is going to affect India more than China.
Starting from toys, clothes, car parts, building & hardware items, gift accessories & decorations, suitcases & bags, smartphones and other electronics to mobile applications we depend on Chinese products extensively. For example, take the smartphones section – 3 out 5 of us have Chinese smartphones😐. Therefore, before we start boycotting Chinese products, we need to analyse whether we have alternatives for those products.
As for the matter of boycotting PUBG, I feel that it is totally a decision that the users have to take personally. The choice between patriotism and convenience lies in our hands for now.
Will you boycott PUBG MOBILE? Do you think our India economy can sustain and grow more by boycotting Chinese products? Let us know in the comments section. Also, follow Just A Library for more interesting news on various domains.
90’s kids: A typical day in our childhood – Do you think 90’s kids were just awesome? We had such a wonderful childhood that cannot be explained in just a single post. Check out our Why 90’s kids childhood was awesome? post for a heads-up. Well, if you were able to revive your childhood memories in our previous post, you are in for luck today! We have decided to take you through a typical day of a 90’s kid. Get ready to go back to your Class V memories!!
90’s kids – The Morning Routine
Get up, Get up, Get up, it’s 7:30 already!
When the clock strikes 6:30 in the morning, Amma begins her usual mantra. “Get up, Get up, Get up, it’s 7:30 already!”. Half an hour later, with the religious BGM and Boost aroma, we wake up praying at least one of our teachers to be absent today. Preferably our maths or history teacher.
The morning routine begins by sipping down our energy drink along with the disappointment of not having a PT period today. We then proceed to pack our bags according to the day’s timetable. Regretting that we haven’t done our homework, we head to the bathroom for a shower. By the time we get ready, Amma comes with the trailer version of lunch (usually the excess food she was unable to pack in our lunch boxes) for our breakfast. As she feeds us this lunch teaser, we get our diaries signed (without getting scolded or beaten up).
Off To School
The school van’s endless horns mark the end of breakfast and the beginning of amma’s interrogation about socks, ID cards, belt, lunchbox, and so on. We run with the school bag (weighing double our weights) and board the overcrowded van with an overestimation about the seat; only to be seated in a two-seater with four people. The bumpy and jammed ride to school not only ruins amma’s makeup efforts but also our day even before we land on the school compound.
Morning assemblies extending till the end of the first period were our favorites. However, this turns into an annoyance during sunny days. By the time we finish secretly praying for a prolonged assembly, the following dramas will certainly happen.
Someone from the prayer team messes up either the prayer, the Pledge, or the National Anthem.
The teachers run around to care for students who became dizzy and fainted.
Principal endlessly announces the good and (mostly) bad news.
Laughs at our latecomer friend who also wore the wrong uniform on that day (double dhamaka).
Think of excuses to escape PT sir’s punishment for missing either the belt, ID card, tie, badge, or socks (as we left home in a parapara).
90's kids : A typical day in our childhood
Pre-lunch Class Hours
Despite our sincere prayers for a prolonged assembly, we end up starting our class from the first period (probably an annoying maths class). During the gap between first and second periods, if we find out the following subject teacher is absent, jackpot!! The entire class turns into a “fish market“. Gossips, bench fights, chalk fights, class Olympics, stationery tradeoffs, pen fights, hand cricket, flames, WWE (cards as well as physical version), mimicking teachers, everything happens in that one hour and continues till the end of the first break.
Our hope to continue this fun in the third period is usually destroyed by the topper seated on the front bench. He/she deliberately reminds the teacher of the class test which we may (or mostly may not) somehow manage to write. Our test frustration gets an upgrade – the hunger!! Hence, the fourth period will be mainly lunch trailer recaps (we had in the morning) and yearning for the bell to ring.
Yes!! It’s time for the food exhibition and the food exchange. From unwrapping of the (classic checked red, green, or blue) lunchbox towels and unboxing the lunchboxes, from roaming around and selecting the delicacies to enjoying the buffet lunch, everything takes about 20 minutes. Lunch is usually followed by the next round of the Olympics for about 20 minutes and finally ends with the lunch break end bell.
Post-lunch School Hours
The delicious meal in our tummy begins its work in the fifth period. Yes, we start feeling extremely sleepy😴. However, our sleep in this lullaby class (probably a history class) gets disturbed. And jealousy overpowers our drowsiness when we see the adjacent class going for the PT period. In this vexation and resentment when we open our pencil box, we find another pencil box opening at the other end and sadly realize we possess a Maruthi 800 box in comparison to their Rolls Royce box.
Finally, somehow or the other we push forward the time thinking about going home until the last period. The five minutes before the last bell is when we update and get our school diaries signed. Once the last bell rings, we rush out of the classrooms happy and excited to go home. After the final round of Olympics (now in the school ground), gossips, revenge fights, and other fun activities (while waiting for the second trip of the van) we reach our homes tired and hungry.
After School
Back to Home
As soon as we reach home, the first thing we do is throw away the shoes and race into the kitchen (sliding with socks on) for the evening snacks and chai to encountered by Amma’s question – “How was your day?”. Following a briefing about our day (usually self-praise) and the short WWE with siblings for the TV remote, we tune into our favorite channels like Doordarshan or Cartoon Network for the daily marathon of cartoons.
90's kids : A typical day in our childhood
Beginning with WWE at 4:30 pm followed by Sakthiman, Power Rangers, Boogie Woogie, Shakalaka Boom Boom, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Mickey Mouse, Adventures of TinTin, Popeye, Duck Tales, Scooby-Doo and so on, the binge-watching and chai-snacks uploading end when Amma switches off the TV angrily.
The TV time is followed by outdoor playtime. Yes! We sneak out of amma’s sight, usually into the neighbor’s house or a nearby field to play. This further infuriates amma which results in a running race between us and amma (picture her with a twig in hand) around the house. Once caught, we receive amma’s immense love (with the twig of course) and are sent for the bath.
The so called “Study time”
Once refreshed, it’s time for the studies and homework. Not a great time though😒. A phone call for amma or a power cut is considered a bliss during this time as it is an opportunity for us to continue our TV marathon or have fun, which typically extends throughout our dinner. Finally, half-sleepy and half-lazy, we brush our teeth, retire to bed, and a day in our childhood ends. Nevertheless, this fun-filled innocent cycle repeats the next morning😋.
As you can notice, our moms played and still plays a very important role in our lives. Hence, before we wind up, we would like you to introspect on whether the bond we had with our parents is still the same or not.
We are no longer children anymore, but the innocence and playfulness still remain in us, which is why we proudly call ourselves – “The 90s Kids”.
Hope we have successfully covered a typical day in a 90’s kid. Please let us know your thoughts and memories about this in the comment section below. Also, follow Just A Library for more interesting content.
As we all know, Corona Virus, A.K.A. Covid-19 is an infectious respiratory disease, that has been declared as a ‘Pandemic’ by W.H.O. Currently, the world is fighting against this invisible enemy, which is threatening each and every person, costing their lives, economy, productivity, and much more.
This pandemic has cost us millions of dollars and every Government has geared up to combat the pandemic with proactive measures in line with global approaches and guidelines. Talking to the readers of Just A Library, is Dr. Ramkumar, from a Govt. owned hospital in Chennai, India working shifts in the corona ward, who has magnanimously agreed to throw light on some queries we all have, if and how to live with coronavirus without getting infected by it.
WHY ARETHE CASES SUDDENLY RISING IN CHENNAI?
Chennai has become a hotspot and daily records the highest number of cases in Tamil Nadu. A city that makes everyone’s life better (vantharai vazhavaikum nagaram) has turned into a massive cluster of corona cases and people are fleeing from Chennai. So why did Chennai get many cases when compared to other districts?
The first reason is the huge population (70.9 lakh as of 2011 data). Even though the population is less compared to Bengaluru or Mumbai, the problem in Chennai city is overcrowding, especially in North Chennai. Lack of awareness about the virus and taking lesser precautions while going out are the major causes of transmitting the virus.
Corona in India: Explained
TREATMENT AT GOVERNMENT/PRIVATE HOSPITAL
First and foremost, readers should know that the cost of treatment for the coronavirus is absolutely free in Govt hospitals and corona care centers. Govt has taken measures to make sure that food safety is provided round the clock to its citizens who have been infected and admitted to the Govt hospitals. A list of healthy food including dried nuts, sundal, kadalai, soup, egg, chicken, and kabasura kudeneer is being given to the patients to promote and boost their immunity.
Treatment at private hospitals is done to ensure that adequate beds are available for all the people and the Govt has introduced Fees slab so that there won’t be fee cheating in terms of treatment for the patients.
Corona in India: Explained
WHY INDIAN POPULATION IS MOSTLY ASYMPTOMATIC:
Well, it is a blessing in disguise. Thanks to the common resident bacteria and the virus dwelling in our country along with us, infecting our children and adults, thereby providing us an acquired immunity. That acquired immunity gained by repeated infection is providing us the shield right now; resisting the coronavirus from infecting our body. This is a hypothesis, but now widely accepted by researchers.
Another reason is the widespread BCG vaccination which is being given to all the children as soon as they are born and the endemicity of malaria infection has provided us the adequate immunity to cross-react with the virus. Lastly, high temperature and humidity are indirectly helping in cutting the link for the transmission of the virus.
EVEN THOUGH SWAB NEGATIVE, CT SCAN SHOWS SIGNS OF INFECTION FOR SOME. WHY?
The PCR (Polymerase chain reaction), a common swab test done to detect coronavirus antigen may sometime show false negative (test result negative but the patient is positive for the virus).
This is because of specimen quality and the viral load. The test done to extract the sample is painful and may initiate a powerful cough and sometimes choking sensation as the swab is introduced to the back of the nose and throat, because of that, improper sampling is highly possible.
Next is the viral load, the test will detect the antigen if the viral load is more, so it may show negative when the viral load is few in numbers.
Corona in India: Explained
This creates a huge community problem as the person will be tested negative but still harbors the virus and may dangerously transmit the virus to the community. Such types of patients should be subjected to a repeat test and should be placed under quarantine.
If the patient develops symptoms, they should be given additional tests like X-Ray and CT Scan of the chest to rule out the viral pathology in the lungs.
TREATMENT PROTOCOLS
Asymptomatic patients do not require any treatment. What they need are adequate bed rest and strict home quarantine. The Officers from the Corporation of Chennai daily visits them at their doorstep to enquire about the symptoms and the doctors examine the health of the patient.
If the patient’s oxygen level starts to decrease, they are immediately admitted for oxygen care. If he/she develops breathlessness, the patient is ventilated and given advanced life support in the hospital.
EFFECT OF CHLOROQUINE ON CORONA VIRUS:
There is a lot of controversies whether hydroxychloroquine will protect against the virus. Recently, India shifted lakhs of hydroxychloroquine to the United States and other countries.
Corona in India: Explained
So is HCQ really protective? Once again, not enough studies available, and lots of researches are going on to prove the effectiveness of HCQ on coronavirus. Hydroxychloroquine has mild antiviralproperties and immune-modulatory activity which can limit the spread of the virus in the body and can resist the severity of the infection.
CAN A PERSON GET REINFECTED WITH THE VIRUS AFTER GETTING CURED?
A person once infected with the virus will develop immunity so that when the same person is infected again, he/she will develop immunity to combat the virus and the symptoms will be minimal or mild or no symptoms than the previous infection. Since the person develops immunity in their body, the chance of getting reinfected is less but the risk is always there, so precautions should be taken even if the person is cured for the coronavirus before.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
What the general public should know is how can we protect ourselves from the coronavirus without affecting our day-to-day life. The coronavirus has changed our routines immensely and at this time people should start to live their life along with the virus as the virus will not leave us in the near future.
Stop traveling for vacation/tourist places.
Stop greeting people by handshake instead greet with folded hands.
Start wearing a mask when you go out for the market, public place, etc.
Wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with normal soap or handwash frequently.
Stop touching the mouth, nose, eyes often.
Maintain social distancing when traveling in public transport, holy places, etc.
Clean groceries, vegetables with turmeric water, and nicely wash it before cooking it.
Drink lots of water and eat well; Have a protein-rich diet, vitamin supplements.
Drink kabasura sura kudineer twice a week, Vitamin C supplements to boost immunity.
And lastly, follow all the advice our Govt tells us and be responsible citizens.
Corona in India: Explained
Wearing a mask will protect from the virus (98%) than without a mask. So by wearing a mask and maintaining the social distancing, together we all can stop corona and drive it out of our lives and this world.
Let’s gear up and brace ourselves for the New Normal!

Tensions at the India – China border is on a all-time high, due to the face-off at the LAC
We are all shook, angry, confused, and deeply heartbroken on hearing 20 of OUR MEN have been martyred by the Chinese at the LAC, on 15th June. But what actually transpired? Why did this happen? When did this start?
We know, India and China have both been facing rising tension from the other side, since May. There were endless incidents of escalations and also de-escalations post diplomatic dialogue-exchange.
It was reported that the Chinese troops have crossed the border and entered the Indian side of it, as early as 24th May. But, both countries maintained close communication through diplomatic and military channels. On June 6th, the border troops of both countries held a commander – level military meeting and reached a consensus on easing the situation.
LATEST HAPPENINGS
Now, on 15th June, there was communication between the diplomats of the 2 countries and the Chinese counterpart promised that their troops will disengage and depart from the Indian side of the border. But, what did they do instead? Built ILLEGAL Structures including an Observation post at Patrolling point 14 on OUR END of the LAC Border. When the Commanding Officer: Col.Santosh Babu and 50 of his men visited the standoff point, to check if they had retrieved their troops, they were shocked to still see them on our territory and decided to demolish their Illegally built structures and set them on fire (Rightfully So).
On Monday, 15th June, China brought in a huge number, all prepared for combat. Col. Santosh Babu and his brave battalion tried blocking Chinese Intrusion and ended up sacrificing their lives in this intense face-off. Initial reports claimed the loss of 2 soldiers – Sepoy Ojha, Havildar Palani and Col. Santosh.
Indian soldiers died at LAC ( Source – Internet )
But, later on, 16th June evening, reports claimed that we have lost AT LEAST20 men and that the numbers may increase. It stated that 17 men from the Indian troops that were severely injured in the line of duty at the standoff location and exposed to sub-zero temperatures in the high altitude terrain have succumbed to their injuries, raising the total number that was killed to 20. Sources have claimed that the numbers will rise further, as some soldiers are MISSING. Some speculate they were taken captive by the Chinese. And, there are more that are critically injured due to this standoff.
This is the first time our soldiers have been killed at the India – China border, since the 1962 war. Even on 15th June, both India and China have confirmed there was no firing of bullets.
Both sides threw rocks and stones at each other. Indian soldiers were pushed into the Galwan river, from where their bodies were pulled out. ANI claims that 43 Chinese Soldiers have been killed in this standoff.
The Blame Game
China is yet to confirm this and has not claimed any casualties. China’s idea of an explanation is simply shifting the blame on India! Chinese Spokesperson Zhao Lijian, unabashedly insisted that India Provoked them first! And continued to Claim that Indian soldiers not once, but twice illegally crossed borders and entered their territory. He mentioned, Indian troops had executed provocative attacks on Chinese personnel, seriously violating the consensus.
Indian Army released an official statement saying that both parties have disengaged at the Galwan Area. Knowing China’s history of unwarranted aggressive behaviour with almost the whole world, it isn’t hard to predict that this isn’t the end of the PLA action plan.
India may not be interested in a war, but it sure is prepared for one! India isn’t what it was in 1962.
What do you think about the India – China face-off severed at the LAC? Let us know in the comments section.

Although childhood is the best time of everyone’s lives, being a 90’s kid was extra special. Rightfully, we were the last generation that experienced the transition of the world from a place without technologies to an optimum amount of technology to an electronic world as we see it today.
Starting from the games we played, the food we ate, the festivals we celebrated, the way we spent time with family and friends, our schooling, the way we were parented, every aspect of our childhood was an exotic experience which can never be recreated.
Even though such experiences are long gone and we can’t travel back to that point in time, we hope this article will help you feel nostalgic.
Note: We recommend to you the “Dil wale puchde ne cha” BGM at the end of every conversation given.
Remember this typical conversation between the salesman and your parent every time while shopping? Even though those shirts/banyans were knee-length and loose-fitting, we wore them with great pride and joy. Yes, we were those swag style icons!
Boys! We are damn sure you possessed the A/C fishnet banyans in your casual wear collection. As for the girls, petticoats were the norm – the typical after-school dress for many.
2. Hair
Haircare: Haircare in the ’90s was of utmost importance. Therefore, you were likely to see more oil on girls’ hair than in your curry. Although the teens and kids equally hated this practice, we must admit that this is the sole reason why we still have healthy hair during our adulthood.

Haircut: Back in those days, hair saloon and haircut were luxuries limited to the boys. Although boys flexed about this luxury and went to the barbershop with high expectations, the conversation between your parent and the barber would have been as below :
Barber : “Anna, entha mari style la haircut pananum?”
Parent : “No. 1 blade use panni otta vettirunga pa”
Finally, luxury turns into nightmare the next day when you go to school!
Hairstyle & Accessories: Girls back in those days, mostly owned a huge collection of butterfly clips, mini round hair clips, Kajol Hairbands, and hair scrunchies to style up their fountain hairstyle or the partitioned French braid. Nevertheless, boys were always happy with a single comb and their center partitioned oily hair.
The makeup style progressed from the big black Kajal makeup when you were one-month-old to powder topped with colourful bhindis.

#2 Confectionaries
Nothing beats the taste of a handful of orange candies or the animal/letter biscuits you got for ₹2 in those days. Nevertheless, Maha Lacto, Aasai Chocolates, Mango bites, and Choki-Choki were regarded as the showstoppers.
The ’90s also had several popular chocolates which you may not be able to buy again including Bytes, Rol.a.Cola, Center shock, Piknik. We also had a few weird choices of sweets like Calcium Sandos, Polo, Phantom Cigarette candy.

Technology
Tyre and stick were the first forms of self-made automotives during your childhood. Most probably, this invention of yours might have been the foundation for your engineering career according to your parents.
Other technologies only 90s kids used are as follows:
Landlines without caller ID were the smartphones we had, with the entire contact list stored in our brain. Unwinding the coiled wires was one of the major time pass activities while gossiping over the phone.
During the early 90s, every village had one TV which united the village people. However, during the later part of the 90s, Big Fat Box TV along with TV stand covering half the area of the living area became popular.
While 2K kids complain about the storage issue in 128Gb or 256Gb smartphones, We, the 90s kids were irritated by the “No space for message” error message in a basic Nokia phone.

The relation between pencil and audio cassette was a longlasting love story.
Manual window sliders in cars, Film camera for 36 photos of any event, hearing music in the walkman were other technologies we enjoyed as the 90s kids.

Games
There was a time when Nintendo PlayStation was more exciting than Playstation 5. The popular PlayStation games were Super Bros. Mario, Hyper Olympics, Duck Hunt. The Snack game and Bounce in Nokia were the modern games we played. However, the brick game, water ring toss, 4 cups, and Baby Shark fishing game were among the classic games collection.
We also spent quality time outdoors playing cricket in playgrounds, Cooking with mud, Ice and Water, Goli Gundu, Nikal Kunthal, Stapoo. Snakes & Ladders, Hide-&-seek, King-Minister-Police-Thief game were games that were equally enjoyed by children and parents during family time.

The fact is that the 90s kids are no longer kids and would probably have their own kids by now. However, we all had such an amazing childhood that the 90s kids’ childhood memories are endless. And hence, our post doesn’t end here.

What makes Rolls-Royce cars so Expensive? Established in 1904 by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, Rolls-Royce is a car company that has not only survived a century but also maintained its identity as the most luxurious brand. But, ever wondered why is it so expensive? What makes it so special? Let’s find out.
What makes Rolls-Royce cars so Expensive?
Perfection
1. Color
The first thing we notice about a car is its colour. Although every car company has a wide range of colours, nothing beats the palette of 44,000 colours for exterior and interior by the Rolls-Royce. Every Rolls-Royce car’s colour is unique and completely customizable. By default, every car will have 7 layers of colour coatings. However, this may go up to 23 layers based on the customer’s desire.
Fun Fact 1: If the customer desires to get one of the previously used colours, permission from the previous customer who owns the colour is necessary. In other words, every car colour is like the customer’s signature.
Fun Fact 2: The coach stripes for every Rolls-Royce car is drawn by the same person, Mark Court since march 2002. The coach line is hand-drawn using only a squirrel hairbrush. Mark travels worldwide to redraw the coach line if needed.

2. Wheels and Grille
In order to reduce the tyre cavity noise and create a serene atmosphere inside the cabin, Rolls-Royce uses Contisilent tyres from Continental. Contisilent tyres can reduce the noise by 9 dB.
Fun Fact 3: As many of us know this already, the RR symbol in the wheel never spins; the wheel centres are self-righting.
Moving on, the Pantheon grille infront of every Rolls-Royce car is handmade. The design was inspired from the Pantheon Temple, Rome. To create an optical illusion, the grille has wider columns at the edges and thinner columns towards the middle. You will be surprised to notice that the grille design and perfection remain the same even after a century.
Craftsmanship
1. Starlight Headliner
Debuted in 2007, the starlight headliner makes every journey a magical experience. Every stellar scene is created by integrating optical fibres into the leather. Each constellation is unique and could take 9 to 17 hours for the craftsmen to craft this.

Fun Fact 4: If you are rich enough, you could get even the star map at the time of your birth to be crafted as the headliner.
2. Dashboard
As the name suggests, The Gallery is a meaningful expression of art, design and engineering excellence. An uninterrupted glass protects the artwork in the car. The Rolls-Royce has its own exclusive design team to convert the customer’s imagination into an artistic reality.
“The Gallery is an innovation that furthers Rolls-Royce’s unparalleled Bespoke capabilities. Patrons are now invited to commission artworks for their own personal Gallery within Phantom, in essence, bringing art, within art.”
Torsten Müller Ötvös, Chief Executive OFFICER, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

3. Spirit of Ecstasy
The iconic symbol of luxury and elegance – Spirit of Ecstasy. This enigmatic mascot of Rolls-Royce Motor cars is the symbol of dream – energy, grace and beauty. In 1909, Eleanor Thornton’s presence was crystallised in the form of an ornamental figurine, by the artist Charles Sykes. The statuette woman leans forward with her arms outstretched behind and above her, billowing cloth running from her arms to her back, resembling wings.
Fun Fact 5: Originally silver-plated, the mascot was changed to nickel or chrome alloy after 1914, to prevent theft. Today your Spirit of Ecstasy can be stainless steel, 24-carat gold, illuminated frosted crystal, or even matte black and studded with diamonds!!

Fun Fact 6: In 2003, BMW group paid $65 million to acquire the rights of the Rolls-Royce name, symbol and the Spirit of Ecstasy.
Fun Fact 7: As a safety feature, the mascot retracts to the body when inflicted with force to prevent theft.
Luxury
1. Leather Upholstery
When it comes to luxury and comfort in a car, nothing beats the leather upholstery. Being the most luxurious car brand, Rolls-Royce takes it a step forward. The leather used in every Rolls-Royce ever comes from the Scandinavian bulls. However, Rolls-Royce never uses cowhide because female cattle are prone to getting stretch marks during pregnancy.

Fun Fact 8: The leather used in the car upholstery always comes from the bulls slaughtered for meat.
Fun Fact 9: Rolls-Royce doesn’t have any pre-defined base price as the price depends on the level of luxurious customisation.
However, Rolls-Royce car Ghost price starts at Rs 6 Crore and the Rolls-Royce Phantom starts at Rs 9.50 Crore in India.
If you have money, Rolls-Royce will set your imagination rolling. To summarise, the Rolls-Royce is the definition of Perfection, Precision, Craftsmanship and Luxury.

Voice for the Voiceless – Recent Animal Cruelty Incidents
Imagine being a living creature that doesn’t have a voice or a twitter account to rant! Now imagine being subjected to malicious torturing, incapacitating, mutilating or killing. Feels terrible, doesn’t it? You can’t understand why this is happening to you or if you deserve to be treated like this. Do they rule the world because they have extra sets of senses? But isn’t that supposed to guide them to be better, you wonder. Animal cruelty is one of the most painful things to hear or see or read about. It can be something as trivial as intentionally depriving an animal of food and water and as psychopathic as molesting or raping it for pleasure.
Recently, we’ve all been hearing and seeing some agonizing videos of animals being subjected to cruelty, all over the news.
Here, are some recent gut-wrenching, deeply saddening realities of the animals around us.
1. Dabbu the stray dog, fractured its skull after being beaten with an iron rod.
In Mumbai, in mid-September 2017, Surekha Kharat, an animal lover feeding stray dogs in the area found Haroon Khan beating up Dabbu, on the CCTV and immediately rushed to rescue him. Dabbu was repeatedly beaten with an iron rod by the 24-year-old and eventually fractured his skull.

5. College Students throw puppy off building’s terrace
We found 2 incidents. We’re not sure how many are left untold. One happened in 2016 in Madha Medical College, Chennai by 2 MBBS students and the other by an Engineering student from VIT Vellore in 2017. Even though this happened a while ago, doesn’t this still send a chill down your spine? Educated, to-be doctors and engineers throwing puppies off the building’s terrace.
The MBBS students threw a 6-month-old puppy off a building’s terrace. When caught, they were asked to pay INR 2Lakhs fine each and arrested only to be let off in bail, in no time.

Let’s talk about the engineering student. When asked why he did that, his response was “It’s just a dog, I didn’t kill a human” with no signs of remorse. He threw a month old newborn puppy from the terrace of his house. The poor pup died on the spot. There’s more! Looks like he had planned to go on a killing spree! He had discussed with his friends about killing another dog. We got a snap of the chat. Take a look.

6. Pregnant Elephant dies after eating a pineapple stuffed with crackers
We’ve all heard about this on the news and been outraged and heartbroken about the pregnant elephant’s death in the Veliyar river in Mannarkad area of Palakkad district. There have been a lot of misinformation about the place of death and also if people fed the pineapple to it, or if it was an accident. According to latest claims, these pineapples filled with crackers have been used to guard farms from wild boars and this practice is age-old and govt. approved. Read more.

7. Pregnant Cow fed with explosives, injures jaw
Even when we were not over mourning the elephant incident, there was yet another shocking and painful news from Himachal, when a man mixed explosives with food and fed to a pregnant cow. It suffered a huge injury on the cow’s jaw. Thanks to prompt medical attention, the cow’s now recovering. A day after this incident, the mother gave birth to a beautiful and healthy calf.
Voice for the Voiceless - Recent Animal Cruelty Incidents
Now, let’s back up a little and talk about the Pregnant Elephant again. What’s extremely saddening is that some people see this as an opportunity to create hate and divide amongst people based on religion or state or language. This is WRONG.
But, is this practice humane? Are we justifying this killing and all other killings we don’t know about because we need them to stay away from our farms? Whether it’s an elephant or a deer or a wild boar, killing = KILLING and nothing else! It’s not acceptable for people to say “Urban people have no say in rural lives and can’t tell us how to protect our farms.” We can collectively brainstorm and protect farms as well as not kill animals. Isn’t it a Win-Win?
Solution?
1. How about we start by stopping acting entitled, and like we own this planet and other animals need to live at our mercy?
2. Treat Animals as living beings. This attitude of “But, they’re not humans” is just horrendous.
3. Even small actions of negligence like not reporting an injured animal lying on the road can cause its life. So, do not ignore when strays around you need help.
4. Find more humane ways to fend fields that don’t involve mixing explosives in their food.
5. Tightening Animal Cruelty laws.
Lastly but most importantly,ANIMALS ARE NOT OURS TO EXPERIMENT ON, USE FOR ENTERTAINMENT, OR ABUSE IN ANY OTHER WAY. It’s high time we learn to live and let- live.
The Greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated
